Giving your board a quick hot wax
Giving your board a quick hot wax-we all love our boards and caring for them makes the love grow fonder. This is just the basics of all basics. They say you should wax your board regularly, whatever that means. I usually wax my baby about every 6th time out there, but I have also gone a whole season without waxing due to laziness. You can see when your board needs it.
You only need four things-
Snowboard (or ski) wax, make sure it is hot iron wax like Kwik
Scraper, I prefer the plastic ones over the metal ones, also, I do not like the ones made specifically for snowboards because you can’t apply the correct even pressure when you scrap
Iron, I just picked up a used iron at the Goodwill, if you have the money you can get an iron specifically designed for waxing skis and snowboards they will give you a more even wax, but just remember not to use the iron you will use on your clothes
Scouring Pad, the green ones you can find at the grocery store
You are going to need to set up a work station. It is best to do it out in the garage, someplace that is easy to clean up. I just do it in my kitchen, and move the rugs out. You will need a place to put the board bottom up in a secure way. I prop my board up on two of those plastic storage bins.
1. You will want to wipe off any dirt and debris from the base of your board with a clean cloth. Turn the iron on, make sure it is not too hot; I put mine on the medium setting below the ‘steam’ settings. The iron should be hot enough to melt the wax easily but not so hot that the wax smokes.
2. As I am waiting for the iron to heat up, I usually scrap off any of the remaining wax for the last job. If you had it done somewhere else, this is a good idea.
3. Hold the iron above the base of your snowboard (I usually go directional, nose to tail) and carefully press the wax into the iron to melt it. As the wax begins to drip off the iron, move the iron back and forth across the board and down in little zigzags, evenly distributing the wax from tip to tail.
4. Turn the iron off and wait for the wax to cool and soak into your board, usually about 15-20 minutes.
5. Grab your scraper and you are going to scrap the wax off. All the wax your board needs has soaked into pores of the base. You should go from tail to nose. You will need to use pressure to really get the excess wax off.
6. Use the scouring pad to buff the finish. Like before, you want to go from nose to tail.
7. Now go snowboard on your favorite Montana Mountain.
